    What exactly is fencing?

At Fort Bend Fencing Academy we hold many fencing programs and tournaments at many different levels. We have a great passion for fencing and do our best to live up to its rich history. According to Wikipedia Fencing is a term that refers to a group of three fighting sports. The foil, épée, and sabre (also saber) are the three disciplines of modern fencing, with winning points determined by the weapon's interaction with an opponent. Singlestick, a fourth discipline, debuted in the 1904 Olympics but was discontinued after that and is no longer used in modern fencing. Fencing was one of the first Olympic sports to be introduced. The majority of competitive fencers prefer to focus on only one arm. Athletics, cycling, swimming, and gymnastics are the other four sports that have appeared in every modern Olympic Games.

Modern fencing as we know it today emerged at the end of the nineteenth century, based on traditional swordsmanship techniques, with the Italian school modifying the historical European martial art of classical fencing, and the French school later improving the Italian system. Today's modern fencing is divided into three types, each of which employs a different technique. There are three competitive scenes in the sport: foil, épée, and sabre. Competitive fencing is one of them. We are the best fencing club academy in Texas. Join our fencing academy today!

What is the history of fencing?

Modern-day fencing as we know it today can be traced way back to the evolution of swordsmanship for duels and self-defense. According to Wikipedia Fencing is thought to have begun in Spain, and some of the most influential books on the subject were written by Spanish fencers. Diego de Valera's Treatise on Arms was written between the mid 1400's and 1471 and is one of the oldest extant manuals on western fencing. During the conquest, Spanish powers brought fencing all over the country, including to southern Italy, which was a major source of conflict between the two countries. Fencing was listed in Shakespeare's play The Merry Wives of Windsor, which was written before 1602.  The mechanics of modern fencing originated in an Italian Renaissance school of fencing in the 18th century and were improved by the French school of fencing under their influence. The Spanish school of fencing died out, and the Italian and French schools took their place. At Fort Bend Fencing Academy we hold a variety of different fencing programs and tournaments at many different levels. Come be part of fencing's rich history and join our fencing academy today!
